A 50mm binocular is often referred to as a “twilight binocular”, as the large lenses provide extra good light transmission at dusk and generally under unfavorable light conditions. Binoculars of this size usually weigh a little more than standard 42mm binoculars, which can be important on e.g. longer trips in the wild.

A 12x magnification provides a smaller field of view than with 10x magnification, but on the other hand brings objects very close and thus makes it possible to see e.g. smaller details in a bird’s plumage. However, at a magnification of 12x, the binoculars may seem difficult to hold still. It may therefore be advantageous to use a tripod adapter and a tripod for longer observations.
